Jhanan Di Raat: An Extensive Study
The current course is an effort to engage in a serious reading of Jhanan Di Raat (The Night of Chenab). In this course, we’ll read selected poems from Jhanan Di Raat, and discuss the poetical experiences manifested in the poems. Harinder Singh Mahboob’s Jhanan Di Raat is a collection of seven books. However, the seven books relate such a stream of experience that makes Jhanan Di Raat a single book. Reading this book is a learning process in itself. The reading requires expertise in language, intellectual and affective relation with the Sikh historical experience, familiarity with Abrahamic and Hindu myths, proximity with Punjabi folklore, cognizance of the geographies of different areas, Sandal Bar and Malwa in particular, of Punjab, and a basic awareness about Punjab’s spiritual and religious traditions.
Jhanan Di Raat is full of imaginative flights beyond the narrow circles of the modernist schools of thought. While sharing feelings about human Self, union-separation, violence, nihilism, and traumas these flights, at times, share spaces with European Continental philosophy. Hence, while reading this book, the discussions will refer to some continental philosophers as well. Simultaneously, there will be considerations about how such poetic experiences relate to Western as well as Easter philosophies (Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic, and Sufi).
The lectures will be in Punjabi but some of the reading material will be in English. It will be a thirteen-week course with three-hour weekly sessions.
